Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, 'When only 10 percent of the students in Elite higher education come from families in lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution.'

If you know of a family earning less than $40,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free...no tuition and no student loans!

They offer reduced tuition if you earn between 40,000 and 60,000.

To find out more about Harvard offering free tuition for families making less than $40,000 a year visit Harvard's financial aid website at: http://adm-is.fas.harvard.edu/FAO/index.htm <http://adm-is.fas.harvard.edu/FAO/index.htm> or call the school's financial aid office at (617) 495-1581.

SEND TO SOMEONE WHETHER THEY CAN USE OR NOT. THEY JUST MIGHT KNOW SOMEONE WHO CAN!

MARIE TRAHAN/SUSMAN GODFREY SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORTS DIVERSITY IN LEGAL PROFESSION
Houston, TX (BlackNews.com) - Issues of diversity in the legal profession are hot topics today. Much of the discussion centers on hiring more diverse lawyers. Susman Godfrey is taking it a step further--by providing the monies to educate more diverse lawyers.
The law firm of Susman Godfrey L.L.P. has endowed a new scholarship that will be awarded each year to an African-American law student who is a resident of Texas. The scholarship can be used at any accredited law school in the country.
The Marie Trahan/Susman Godfrey Scholarship is named in memory of Marie Trahan, who was the firm's long-time receptionist in their Houston office. "For 25 years, Marie Trahan was the familiar face and voice that greeted our lawyers, staff and clients," said Susman Godfrey's managing partner, Steve Susman. "As an African American, Ms. Trahan was certainly aware of the need for more diversity in our profession. I can think of no better way to honor her memory and her important contributions to the firm than by supporting this ongoing cause."
The Marie Trahan/Susman Godfrey Scholarship will be administered by the foundation of the Dallas-based J.L. Turner Legal Association. This African-American bar association also administers the Barbara Jordan Scholarship, the Fred Finch Scholarship and the Judge's Scholarship. All are based on both merit and need. One of Susman Godfrey's current associates benefited from a previous JLTLA Foundation scholarship.
"We constantly speak about the need to fill the pipeline with more African-American law students," said JLTLA President Vicki D. Blanton. "Susman Godfrey's endowment supports this mission and more -- 'walking the talk' when it comes to diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. We are grateful for this donation."
"Because of the overwhelming response within the firm to the idea of establishing a scholarship in honor of Ms. Trahan, we are making a contribution of $103,305 to be used to endow this scholarship," said Susman Godfrey's diversity committee chair, Ophelia Camiña. "This amount is an amazing testament to Ms. Trahan's service and friendship as well as to the firm's commitment to diversity in the legal profession."

About Susman Godfrey L.L.P
Susman Godfrey L.L.P., a law firm with more than 80 lawyers, was recently named one of the top litigation boutiques in the country by The American Lawyer. The firm represents plaintiffs and defendants in a broad range of commercial litigation matters, including antitrust, patent and intellectual property, securities and corporate governance litigation, energy, commercial and products liability litigation, bankruptcy and financial restructuring, accounting malpractice, arbitration, climate change litigation, and foreign and international litigation matters. AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS:

Even if you do not have a college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does, and to anyone and everyone that comes to mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have donated money for scholarships to African Americans, a great deal of the money is being returned because of a lack of interest or awareness.

No one is going to knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship.

Take the initiative to get your children involved.! Money shouldn't be returned to donating companies because we fail to apply for it.

Please pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews, friends with children etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful additional money can be.
