My whole weekend messed up. I saw a video that has messed with my head. A rape video. One hour of five boys taking turns on a girl. So heartbreaking to watch! One woman I showed it to today cried for three hours straight...it's one of the worst things I've ever seen in my life

A female student was gang raped by five boys in Abia State University. This incident happened Tuesday August 16th , 2011. These boys raped this girl, recorded it, passed it round their friends, who then passed it round ABSU campus.

And do you know what her offense was, why this girl was raped? She supposedly insulted one of the boys...that was all.

In the rape video, which lasts for over an hour, the girl cried her eyes out and tried to fight them off in the first few minutes, after a while they subdued her; by slapping her, rough handling her, threatening to kill her and having rough sex with her. After a while she gave in and instead of fighting, she started pleading, and after her pleas fell on deaf ears, she begged them to kill her that she couldn’t take the pain anymore. These boys laughed at her, made fun of her and told her that if she didn't co-operate, they would keep her in the room and continue raping her for two days.

Then she starts mentioning names, saying ‘What did I ever do to you’, (they spoke in English and Igbo language) she mentioned at least two names.

And in between, you will hear her scream out in pain as one guy stands up and another penetrates her...and all the while, these boys are laughing.

In the video, you can clearly see the girl’s face; the boys faces you really can’t see clearly... but they talk a lot and one of them said he’s a 4th year law student, another one said he’s an IT student...names were mentioned...these boys can be fished out.

This girl is someone’s daughter, someone’s sister, someone’s friend, and God’s creation. You cannot do this to another human being and get away with it.

I have the video...one hour of it on my laptop, and 10 minutes of it on my phone...but the rape was more than an hour, she went through this ordeal for several hours. Uploading this video online is not an option, but I want people who can do something about this to see it.

These boys can’t get away with this. Please if there’s any Women Rights Group, police, lawyers, journalists, who can take this up, please contact me; I will bring the video to you, wherever you are or send via email.

Meanwhile, a friend and I contacted one of the aides of the Governor of Abia State today, and he told us categorically that the Governor of Abia State, Theodore Orji, has seen the video and plans to take it up on Monday Sept 19th. I’m in touch with them – let’s see what they do about this.

And whoever you rapists are; you don’t mess with God’s creation. The God I serve will never let you get away with this. HE is coming after you! Just watch! You bastard animals!

Do you see Chi? Suppose they apologized like Olisa, should we just forgive them and move on like you said in that instance? We have to crack down on these type of things whether it is a man attacking another man, or a woman being raped, or a person being violently attacked by a cult... We will never move forward as a society till we change this types of things..

I pray that the police give them a good beating while they are arrested and in police custody. This is so unfair and they had the guts to tape it and display it around the campus.

I saw this video two days after the incident was said to have happened, all efforts to get the relevant authorities proved abortive. The commissioner for education in the state, the governor of that state, the administration of the school...etc. They are all unreachable. I even tried to reach the minister for education on this, but couldn’t get any contact. I tried all I could to reach them, really I tried, but you can’t see these people, as an ordinary Nigerian citizen, except someone in high place takes you there. Of course you know the Nigerian police would first detain you for reporting, (saying they are investigating), Unlike in the US where you don’t even have to get to the police station, but make calls or send emails. You are a Nigerian; I believe and should know better.
Why wouldn’t the Nigerian Police or various governments have functional email addresses and phone numbers where you can reach them?
I had no choice but to go to the press. Yes, I, consernedmother took it to the press. I have been out of this country for years and only returned recently, I wouldn’t have believed that this kind of act could happen in our universities (institute of higher Learning). The students of the University are sure it happened there. This video is all over the campuses in Abia state. Anyone who has a blue tooth phone or a computer has it. I reliably gathered that the video is all over IMSU and FUTO too. Even photographers and traders on Abia state university campus have it. This girl was raped for hours by 5 boys and they treated to kill her in the video if she did not corporate. The version you saw is just 10mins, so you can imagine what this poor child went through. She went through this for hours, in fact it a full video film episode, she begged them to kill her, she told them her father would give them anything they demanded, one of the culprits asked if she would give 1million Naira?. Going to the press is the only way i could bring the relevant authorities attention to this. I had to because since I saw this video I have not been able to sleep. Any mother would be disturbed by this. These boys must be brought to book. As a mother, I have had no rest since saw this video just had to do something. From utterances in the video, one of them said he is a 400level law student, another said he was on his IT, should we allow the universities turn out rapist lawyers. All women must stand up against this. We cannot allow this kind of thing go on in our universities. This girl could have been our daughter, our sister, a friend. Forgive me if I took the wrong step (by going to the press), to bring attention to this, but my heart goes to the poor child; did they kill her, like they threatened to in the video if she did not corporate?
I wish she could come out and speak, but we do not know if these boys killed her, we have to know if she is alive, its only when you are alive you could probably want to speak about this kind of experience. Form the video; you can see that this is a young girl. It is one thing to be raped, and another to know that all the students in your school and other universities know you were raped and even watched the video. You can imagine the trauma this child will go or is going through, if this girl is alive, I pray she is, she needs to be reached as soon as possible.
Why these boys would rape her, video it themselves and send to fellow students all over campus, I do not know. They showed the girl’s face, but were careful not to show theirs. One of them told her in the video, that a fine girl like her had the guts to insult their friend; did they do this to punish her? If the police want to investigate this, they can catch these boys; some names were mentioned in the video.
Once again sorry to all those who were upset by the video, this is the only way I could get the relevant authorities attention.
The relevant authorities need to act fact. They can nail these bastards if they want to. Yes they are bastards, if you ever saw the video you would wonder if these guys have a sister or even a mother. These guys need to be castrated or killed, because if let go they would do it again and again.
Only God knows how many other people they have done this to in the past, but this time their cup is full. Little did they know that by videoing this they would get themselves in trouble?
Where ever they are, sure they must be shaken in their pants.
Names were mentioned. At a point she said ‘’UCHENNA, you in particular, what have I ever done to you’’ another name she mentioned was Chigbo .One of the boys called out to another, Wisdom commot make I do my own. Another one while on top of her said Fine girl like you had the guts to insult our friend, and she says who and he replies Zika or Zitta. You could see all of them changing their condoms taking turn on this poor girl while she begged at one point that they kill her.

Like I told you all on Saturday, we contacted one of the aides of the Governor of Abia State and they told us that they would do an investigation and get back to us. They called me the following day (yesterday) to say they have concluded their investigations. Result - The boys in the video are not students of Abia State University. They called the VC of the school, the VC told them it didn't happen in the school, end of story!

Seriously, I'm not surprised by this statement - no institution wants to be associated with something like this...so I understand...but here's the problem; in fact two issues.

Firstly; One of the girls I spoke with said these boys are from my school. I said what school? She said ABSU. A lot of students there have different versions of this video. And one of them said to me, I don't believe these boys will be caught, we came out with this evidence because we want people outside of this region to know what happens 'sometimes' in these parts. Girls are gang raped and nobody is doing anything about it. Most of the time, the victims don't say anything, and when they do, people ask them 'Wetin you sef do the boys'? Like it's your fault you were raped.

Secondly: How can the school authority say without any reservations that these boys are not their students when their faces didn't even show in the video? Can you tell who your students are by their silhouettes and voices? If there's no Law faculty in Abia State University, then I apologize, maybe I was misinformed; but if there's a law faculty in this school, then I think the school needs to thoroughly investigate this, because one of the boys said he's a 400L student of Law...names were mentioned...

So far, it doesn't look like ABSU is interested in doing a proper investigation. The VC said there's nothing in the video that indicates it's ABSU and has asked Student Union President to issue a statement exonerating the school.

Alleged Rape Case
The Abia State Government has carried out an investigation on this matter and the truth is that, the alleged video never emanated from the university.

The victim and the perpetrators are not students of Abia State University. Those associating ABSU with such barbaric visor should please desist from such. The university is safe for academic activities as known for.

Thank you

And here's a press release from Minister of Youth Development

Minister Condemns Rape of Young Nigerian Girl, Promises to Rehabilitate Her
The attention of the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has just been drawn to a despicable, immoral and depraved video of a young lady being raped by five men. The condemnable act allegedly took place at the Abia State University, Uturu.

In the video, the young woman was threatened, rough handled, and sexually exploited by the men, who are said to be cultists. To make matters worse, this despicable and wicked act was recorded and circulated by the alleged rapists, who blurred their own faces. This behavior has rightly caused
outrage among young Nigerians, parents and all those who have seen the video recording.

The Honourable Minister views the behavior of the perpetrators as decadent and barbaric; and believes the attitude of these men, if indeed they are young Nigerians, does not represent the character and nature of the Nigerian youth.

Mallam Abdullahi therefore calls on the University authorities and relevant security agencies to step up action to ensure that the heartless and wicked perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted. He has also promised to help rehabilitate the young victim if she would make herself available to the Ministry.

The Honourable Minister calls on Nigerian youths to remain focused and positive-minded, disclosing that his Ministry will soon begin to implement programmes that will address their concerns.

...all I can say is, in some neighborhood, if a boy tries this kind of thing, the girl's brothers or uncles would've been on that campus looking for those boys immediately. Street justice would've been dished out by now.

Sidney you are right..... ..... I am an emotional person and sometimes I assign more weight to a crime than the other and that is what happened in the Olisa's........ but it shouldn't be . Doing the wrong thing is wrong and should be punished irrespective of how little or big the offense is.

Where are the women group that were going to carry placard at Mercy Johnson's wedding?

Is this not exactly where they should even wear bra and ash and march to the President's office for Justice to be done????????

I really don't want to imagine what that young girl must have gone through mentally!
I keep saying this [being a rape survivor myself!] that it is about time stricter penalties are handed out to rapists!!! And scapegoats made of some of them publicly so that the message would go round the nation! The only good [if I may tag anything positive to this heinous act] is that the evil bastards used condoms! As they sure would be carrying diseases if they go round raping women! because it would have been terrible for this girl to suffer an AIDS infection or STD in addition to the psychological trauma she must be going through!

SAD thing is: If this video had not gotten on the Internet, chances of this victim keeping quiet and NOT REPORTING this matter is 90%! As she would want to
'hide her shame'! I never reported mine! I was 17 years old! In University of Jos.

Please I would like to know the update on this matter, as I've been planning to do a Rape Awareness campaign for a long time now in Nigeria. Last trip to naija, I was advised by a couple celebrity friends NOT to tag my name to rape as 'it may spoil my career plans there'.....makes me wonder, what is there to be ashamed of saying one was raped and SURVIVED it??? IS it not this same shame/stigma and need to NOT talk about it that makes the perpetrators get away???? And of course, strike again and again!

These rapists/animals should be castrated!!! Their penises should be designed with sharp razor blades! Into stripes and hot ataruguh (pepper from jos) rubbed into their penises! And very hot, scalding towel wrapped around their penises! While they are naked and handcuffed of course.
And red fire ants introduced to their anuses and their chests and faces. YES! Ahhhh! Naija needs some bad vigilante group O, for situations like these that govt would turn a blind eye on! And oh yes, their pictures [while being tortured] should be circulated all over the internet too! Gbam.
