VB, one question for you. Did any of the HOAYS movie characters speak in Igbo? If so, which characters? Thanks :)

Yes quite a number of them did from Chiwetel, Thandie to Joseph - the oyinbo journalist. Just a few words here and there as the main language was English.

Am with you on that. She has the looks and physical attributes as described in the book. I wonder if she auditioned?

    Judging from her performance

Audition would have taken place in Nigeria and she was in school at the time in the US so that would have been unlikely.

At the time she had only done 'Shuga' so she really wouldn't have been on the 'international radar', and it's very doubtful the 'producers' of 'HOAYS' would have taken a gamble if they even knew of her. How many of 'us' actually watched 'Shuga' and how many Nigerians knew her name? Mr McQueen took a gamble... she wasn't a 'star' before then. It's just business.
Probably every coffee shop in LA has a star working there... most of them will never be found!

Yes I did remember you were in the Shuga thread and aware you knew. Every film will have people talking about alternative possibilities be it to do with the casting, story, plot or something. Great her first feature film has made her a household name but at the time of pre-production for HOAYS why would she have been thought about or considered?
Remember the NR Script thread? Not a soul mentioned her name; and that was well after 'Shuga'. It's no biggie, it's just how things are.

From Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's interview below it looks like Lupita may be starring in a movie based on the book Americanah:

    Part 1

    Part 2

VB, I never heard of Lupita or Shuga until the buzz about 12. It is well and things happens for a reason but she would have been the perfect person to play Kainene in terms of physical description.

Americanah was a such a good one, I read it again after attending Chimamanda's book signing. One encounter I will cherish. Me and my sister chatted and laughed in Igbo and it was wonderful.

Nice interview. Watch for my script thread

When is HOAYS hitting the DVD
