Nigerian’s movie exploit in cinema started with Through the Glass produced and directed by Stephanie Okereke, the movie was said to have grossed over N10 million. Figurine, by Kunle Afolayan followed with over N22 million and now Ije, the latest offering from US based Nigerian, Chimezie is said to have broken records by grossing over N47 million.

With this amount, said to have been grossed from six cinema houses, Ije is competing favourably with other Hollywood movies and no Nollywood movie has done anything close to that. For now, there are only few Hollywood movies in Nigeria that has done more than N47 million, among which is Avatar, which did over N80 million.

Ije was shown in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. And it became the longest running movie in cinema when it kept doing cinema runs for over three months and it kept packing the halls week after week. Ozone Cinema in Yaba was said to have sold the highest and cinema owners reluctantly pulled it from the screens.

The movie features Omotola and Genevieve; many attributed the success of the movie to the two actresses who are adjudged to be the leading light of African movie at the moment.

"Nigerian’s movie exploit in cinema started with Through the Glass..."

Amazing Grace nko? The Widow?
The first movie that had a run in nigerian cinemas (not premiere o) was mission to nowhere and mirror of beauty even though it was just for a week or two. Aside premiere, i dont think Amazing Grace had a run in nigerian cinema, The widow only premiered, it never showed.

Amazing Grace definitely had a run... Possibly not a long run, but a run nonetheless.

The Widow, I'm not sure... I know I saw the poster for it at Silverbird for a long time, though.

Okay, Amazing Grace kinda had a run, i remember but it was short though and i dont think it got a good response, but nonetheless it had a run. The Widow never did. It had an elaborate premiere in lagos and i think abuja or so.

...................................The movie features Omotola and Genevieve; many attributed the success of the movie to the two actresses who are adjudged to be the leading light of African movie at the moment............................
I'm just wondering,..............why does it have to be omotola & Genevieve? Why not Genevieve & omotola? Why does Genny's name have to come second? This is totally unfair.
...........I mean, what criteria did this writer used to determine the order of names?.........like, I just don't get it.
I sensed complete ignorance or serious hatred going on here. I mean, why are they always tryin to steal this girl's thunder?

No she's not, just trying to bring the thread on page 2 I guess...
No! You are wrong. Can you answer the question?....Why omotola before Genevieve? & pls. don't tell me it doesn't matter. Afterall this is Genny's parade. Why even bring the other person's name up at all...................it's just plain stoopid.................All I gots to say is...God bless CNN & Ted Turner.

seriously? stop already. This whole Genny/Omotola statement isnt making sense. Am also a huge Genny fan and i dont see sense in what you have problem with. Omotola and Genevieve, Genevieve and Omotola, who cares whose name gets a first mention. Dsampler i think you need to chill sometimes abeg, Omotola is a star too.

Nollywood actors need some sort of royalty payments....

Well not until movie producers start making serious money from their films. Lets not forget that alot of money was pumped into publicity and the hype machine that led to the success of these films. So we dont even know if the producer has recouped all that yet. We only have like what? Six cinemas, maybe when we have like sixty across nigeria, that would be workable.

This royalty talk is serious business and i feel proper structures should be in place to enable it work properly. Some naija people no even sabi the nitty-gritty of royalty, before you say "jumbo", dem don dey complain about royalty for interviews. The same guys who pay Alaba crooks 600k to put their songs on pirated music Cd compilations cos they feel people buy them more and their music would be well accessed that way.

My ode to Dsampler sweat:

Strumming your pain with my fingers
Screaming OmoT before Genny to ur face
Killing you softly with my screaming
Killing you softly with my singing
Telling you that OmoT is the lead actress for Ije
And this is killing you softly like I care

i see where dsampler is actually coming from. whoever wrote tht i believe wrote it out of spite. genny's name shudda been named first before omotola. cos truth be told, she is the main person pulling the weight. hardly anyone remembers omotola where the movie is concerned.

MW, I don't think you understand. I'm telling you that its not a coincidence that omotola's name came before Genny's eventhough Genny was the star of the movie. Trust me on that. I know what I'm talking about. They did that on purpose. I used to have so called journalist friends like that.
Think about it, how would you love to elevate a movie with your gravitas & see your name in second place among the credits. I'll bet you'd be pissed...Afterall, when omotola was charging people millions of naira to come hear her sing, Genny's name never came up to divert attention to her.........Trust me, I know how these people work.
