Nollwood marketers have banned actress Mercy Johnson Okojie for being too expensive.

Mercy Johnson is currently the highest paid actress in Nollywood. She charges between N1.8million to N2m to feature in a movie. The others, like Ini and Funke charge between N700k to N1.2million.

For this reason, the actress has been blacklisted by the Nollywood Movie Marketers Association.

The ban will not take effect immediately as Mercy has already signed up to do quite a number of movies. She returned on Thursday from a movie location, and will be on the set of another movie from tomorrow, Sunday. She will be traveling out of Nigeria sometime this month and when she returns, will be on another movie set.

The idea now is not to ban her after all her current contracts end. So the ban won't take effect until at least January 2014. This is not the first time the movie marketers association will be placing a ban on actors. They did this a few years ago when quite a number of Nollywood actors including Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Noah, RMD, Emeka Ike, Jim Iyke and others were blacklisted.

She will weather the storm and should get picked up by other African markets.

No Nollywood actor (actress) is worth 2million naira (except for perhaps RMD). The rest of them all suck

You're NOT an actor simply because you can dress up and read your lines. An actor actually needs to act. You gotta become your character!
And most nollywood actors still lack that basic skill sets to really get into their characters.

    O pari

HM you are joking about RMD ? He is one of the most overrated actors in Nolliwood .which of his movies can you suggest so I can rewatch it.
If you ask me that Girl Johnson is a better actor .about the 2 millon naira --here we go again with the maketers banning of people .they should learn from what they did in 2005.

Evidently, some of us has never heard of "the diva of Nollywood". I'm just wondering why RMD & MJ's names were being mentioned as the best in Nollywood........the same Nollywood wey Genevieve Nnaji dey?
abi no be the same RMD wey bin dey hide under bed from the NDLEA for about a year now? Na wa o.

One thing I like about RMD is his ability to really get into his characters. To me, he's the #1 in Nollywood. Watch some of these movies (Behind Closed Doors, Private Sin), he was pretty good.

Ini Edo used to be good as well but I think fame has gotten into her head.

@DS. Haha!! Abi na ma favorite actor you wan finish like dat? You don kolo finis be dat one

i have to say that mercy johnson (when i used to watch movies) would throw herself into a character, as in, she became the character without inhibitions.
    i don't know about now.

She over-acts these days. All over the place, too theatrical, almost like she knows she is good and wants to flaunt it at all cost. But then again that isn't something a good director can't take care of. I guess they just assume she is brilliant and capable and let her get away with those excesses.

Don't see anything wrong with MJ demanding 2mil...the ones that can't afford her should hire someone else, maybe some new talent will get discovered. It should be an open market..these marketers too dey flex muscle. As a producer, if I pay a Nolly actor 2 Million, I will demand her full attention on that project, she'll have to know all her lines before she lands on location. For 2 million, there should be no ad libbing.

In an ideal situation a good director is supposed to have final say, but with these Nolly "stars"...???
I was watching the BTS(behind the scene) clip of the making of "Ije" where they talked about Omotola and the Director butting heads during the shoot. Omotola felt that since it was the director's first feature and since she had been in a lot of movies, she had more experience. As a director, when it comes to Nolly, I go rather deal with newcomers..I no fit massage all those inflated egos. If you notice some of these new actors are performing better than the old cargos that should know better, e.g. OC Ukeje & Gold Ikponmwosa from "Confusion Na Wa". Hopefuly they won't sell out to start making those kpa kpa weekly movies.

I agree. I was a bit disappointed when i saw the Omotola arguing with Director part in Ije, and the part where she said she is experienced bla bla bla. An actor listens, and while i wouldn't want to go into comparism of any sorts i was impressed when i saw Genevieve attentive when the director was giving her leads. No matter how Amaz-in-g you think you are, it is the director's film, his vision and your job is to help him as much as possible to achieve that.

Not like she couldn't have voiced her own opinion, but wrestling the director down because you have been acting for donkey years? Nah!

MV, I couldn't have said this any better. If you are a humble person by nature it will always show thru in anything and everything you do in life including at work. But if you be "hell raiser/commander in chief" behind closed doors for your house, wey be say you go control ya husband, control ya neighbor, control ya baba gateman, control ya cats & dogs, attempt to control everything wey you see including the furniture for ya living room, na so e go show thru at work like that. I totally completely agree with you a million %. Frankly speaking, I think its shameful.

I just have one question about RMD. How da hell do you issue millions of naira check for an event that already took place & done with many years a go? How many times are you going to pay for the same party/event?....unless somebody was trying to double dip. He should stay under that bed o.......otherwise if NDLEA catch am he'll be sorry he ever went into politics.
...and BTW, don't expect to see him on location anywhere any time soon o,...not while he's still hiding under that bed. I heard NDLEA is looking for his behind.

I think she picked the habit up from Genevieve Nnaji. MJ would be the first to admit.......that Genevieve Nnaji is her mentor & hero. I too give her a lot of credit for that.

I totally agree with you...I had the misfortune of watching Baby Oku....men i wanted to throttle the child
It was so exaggerated and over the top. Of course i didn't survive the whole movie..
I have added her to the list of actors to avoid at all coats, she's up there with Tonto and co

Useless marketers! They did not learn from the last ban sham!
Mercy has paid her dues! She is worth that and more! She plays her role and you can almost believe her!
Enemies of progress! Instead of encouraging the girl to aim for the sky, now they want to cut her wings!!??
So what if a producer can afford to pay her $20million???? is it their money? is their job not to sell the movies???
This is what pisses me off about some things in the Naija movie industry now!
Its called BARGAINING power! Let her earn her money! Or they producers should go for cheaper actresses keh!
