Some have expressed misgivings about the Nigerian movie industry being called "Nollywood". I wonder what you folks think about that? A name for such an industry is more of a convenience than anything else. It helps those who like to compartmentalize things - especially foreign press. I read somewhere that when Bollywood was coined in the 70s, initially to poke fun at all the Indian movies produced then aping Hollywood films (though spiced with the song and dance), the industry itself in India was facing a lot of ridicule, something very akin to ours now. However, as the Indians relocated to the West, same way Nigerians are all over the world now, Bollywood - the name - started gaining some respect, since it had started making billions of Dollars annually. Many respected moviemakers in India do not like their industry addressed as Bollywood. A writer argues since japanes industry is not called Jollywood and chinese is not chollywwod, why should Indian be Bollywood after Hollywood, as if it is some copy cat creation? Nigeria is being taken down that road now. We have been tagged Nollywood, probably for want of a better name. What do you guys think? Can we do without a name? Surulerewood? Ha ha!
