The femme terrible of the industry and a real thorn in the flesh of movie producers. Is she a neccessary inconvenience and obstacle or just an inconvenience and obstacle?

    She no be actress o!
She is that woman that heads the nigerian censorship board. The woman that is really a thorn in the flesh of the producers because of her uncompromising approach towards censoring video movies.

My friend dey tell me say she dey very influential, shio. Make una kill one of him pikin make movie out of am, him go soften up kia kia. LOL:p

Seriously though, I think she's overdoing it, some movies are out on video and you're like what d heck????? No storyline nothing, thats what she should be working against not creativity in the form of nudity or violence, cos even though she stops it from coming in from Nigeria, every self serving bastard has DSTV, what they cant get from Nigeria they'll get elsewhere......

But i thought her job was just to rate and not tell people what kind of movies they should be making or what contents their movies should have.
She is sure pissing a lot of people off.

When there are fucking MARKETERS on the streets pirating peoples' sweats and telling them BS. She should be out with the fucked up police squad arresting those fucking Marketers and fucking pirates not the innocent I-WANT-TO-BRING-NOLLYWOOD-CLOSER-TO-HOLLYWOOD producers. Thats my thing. But who am I to talk, am just an innocent girl trying to rumble on the big screen......Not like I'll remember Roseline Odeh when am recieving my grammy or anything:D

una never sabi anything...the thing worri pass as una even think so herte is the real deal on how it works From a personal experience....ENJOY!!

YOU PAY 22,000NAIRA, THEN SUBMIT 3 POSTERS OF YOUR JACKET COVER. THEN WRITE AN APPLICATION, AND THEN WRITE THE SYNOPSIS OF THE MOVIE AND MAKE EIGHT COPIES OF IT. FINALLY, MAKE THREE "PREVIEW" COPIES OF THE MOVIE.

THEY HAVE LIKE THREE SCREENING HALLS AT THE VENUE WE WENT TO IN LAGOS. U SIT AND WAIT FOR YOUR TURN, DEPENDING ON HOW LATE YOU GET THERE. THEY START FROM 8AM OR SO. ANYWAY WHEN IT WAS OUR TURN, WE ENTERED THE SCREENING HALL.. ABOUT 5-8 PEOPLE WERE SITTING. THE SYNOPSIS OF THE MOVIE AND A PLAIN SHEET OF PAPER WAS DIVIDED AMONGST THEM. THEN WE WERE ASKED SOME BASIC QUESTIONS.. WHO WROTE/OWNED/PRODUCED/DIRECTED THE MOVIE. WHICH MOVIE ORGANIZATION IN NIGERIA WE BELONGED TO...

FINALLY THE GUY SLUT IN OUR TAPE, PRESSES THE TIMER.... THE MOVIE WAS PROJECTED ON A WHITE WALL (JUST LIKE A LITTLE CINEMA) WE WERE UPTIGHT CAUSE WE HAVE HEARD SO MUCH ABOUT THEM. SO WE EDITED ALL THE "F WORDS" OUT... AND ANY WORD CONSIDERED "DIRTY" "KISSING TOO LONG" (IT WAS MORE LIKE WE WERE IN COURT WAITING FOR THE JUDGE TO GIVE HIS/HER VERDICT) THEY CHECK FOR THE TINIEST MISTAKE...LIKE A NAME OR WORD SPELT WRONGLY. FOR THAT THEY WILL ASK YOU TO GO AND RE=EDIT IT.... LUCKILY FOR US, THEY LOVED OUR MOVIE (FROM AMSTERDAM WITH LOVE) AND GAVE A PASS MARK. BUT THEN THEY STILL HAVE TO SEND IT TO ABUJA,(FOR 2WEEKS) AND THEY HAVE TO DO THEIR OWN SCREENING THERE, IF ABUJA GIVES THEIR PASS MARK. THEN THEY WILL ISSUE A CERTIFICATE AND RATE UR MOVIE. THEN U CAN FINALLY RELEASE IT TO THE PUBLIC... WELL OURS IS BACK FROM ABUJA AND THEY SAID WE SHOULD REMOVE A PICTURE OF "A PARTY SCENE” AND YES THEY STILL HAVE TO SEE UR PROMO AND GIVE A PASS MARK, IF NOT U CAN'T AIR IT....

PS: SO WHEN IGNORANT PEOPLE COME OUT AND MAKE STATEMENTS ABOUT NAIJA MOVIES. I JUST SHAKE MY HEAD AND WONDER IF THEY HAVE ANY CLUE WHAT IT TAKES TO SHOOT AND FINALLY BRING OUT A MOVIE IN NIGERIA. BY THE WAY NO MATTER HOW CONNECTED YOU ARE IN NIGERIA, YOU MUST PASS THROUGH THE METHOD ABOVE. IF NOT YOUR MOVIE WONT SEE THE DAYLIGHT OR IF YOU RELEASE WITHOUT CENSORS BOARD THEY WILL RAID YOU WITH TRUCK LOADS OF POLICE..
    NA SO E BE O!!!

I feel you, man. I had a couple of contacts with them in the time before Roseline Odeh. Aside of the Ademola Something guy who had some information ministry background, all the others that sat at the screening knew absolutely nothing. They were just civil servants asked to sit and decide on technical things, creative things...and you and I know say civil servant work no be work for naija.

My problem with the board is that it does not understand what it means to just rate movies. You cannot be distating content to a filmmaker. Not your business. Rate him, that's all. If you disagree with something, tell him he got this rating because of this item. If you can tone it done or do away with it, you can get this rating. They don't do that.

We jus dey start sha. Some of our filmmakers too no get any sense of self-restraint and responsibility. Left to them, they will shoot anything and sell just to make money. There are some things that our society just isn't ready for, stuff that are not palatable. When people who don't knowbetter shoot a movie that can influence the minds of others, things get worrisome. I am sure that is why Odeh is taking this stance and she is helping introduce some sanity into the industry.

Things will change as soon as we get a discerning audience.

Thanks for that insight into how the procedure of rating naija videomovies are,Khami.I think the trick to sidestep these people here is to predict what to expect right at the scripting stages.
The script should be written in such a way that it will be easy to make 2 versions of a movie. This should be kept in mind also during editing.
1)A version acceptable to the censorship board.
2)The full uncut version that can be released to the diaspora. This version does not have to be submitted for censorship in naija.
Khami,i think if you people had done this right from the beginning, you would have had less hassles with the board:)
I'm sure, that next time, you people will be a lot smarter, especially now that you've gone through the procedure and aqcuired the neccessary experience.

I quite agree with u on those points. It is not the job of the board to dictate contents of movies, but it is their job to clean it up.Like you rightly pointed out that some of the moviemakers lack self restraint and sense of decency and responsibility in what the contents of their movies are.A moviemaker should excercise a sense of responsibility as well in what he/she is showing to the public.Nigeria is not ready for R rated or X rated movies ala hollywood.

VINCE YOU ARE RIGHT, BUT YOU HAVE TO ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT A PRODUCER HAS TO WORK WITHIN HIS BUDGET. SO LET'S SAY U EDIT FOR $4000, NOW BECAUSE OF CENSORS BOARD AND HAVING ANOTHER VERSION YOU HAVE TO RE-EDIT THE WHOLE FILM AGAIN FOR ANOTHER $4000. NOW THAT IS OVER BUDGET... AND YOU ARE NOT SURE OF GETTING UR MONEY BACK BECAUSE OF PIRACY AND DUBIOUS MARKETERS... AGAIN THIS RESTRAINS YOUR WRITING ABILITY. A WRITER SHOULD HAVE A FREE HAND IN WRITING SO HE CAN BE CREATIVE (MEN IT'S TOUGH!)

@SOLA UR POINT IS WELL TAKEN. THOUGH THEY ARE OVER DOING IT! ABOUT YOU AND VINCE'S ARGUMENT THAT NIGERIA IS NOT READY FOR CERTAIN KIND OF MOVIES. I REALLY DON’T KNOW.......I MEAN WHAT’S THE POINT IN PEOPLE DECEIVING THEMSELVES AND LIVING A LIFE OF LIE?? NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF NIGERIA HAS THERE BEEN SUCH A MASSIVE CIRCULATION OF "PORNO MOVIES" (FROM THE WEST) IT'S EVERYWHERE! ON THE STREET, ROAD SIDE, CORNERS, MARKET.. ANYWHERE THEY SELL MOVIE, IT'S FILLED WITH SO MANY TYPES OF "PORNO VCD" AGAIN THIS SAME RICH PEOPLE HAVE CABLE AND THEY CAN WATCH ALL SORTS OF MOVIES. BUYING "PORNO MOVIES" IN NAIJA IS AS COMMON AS BUYING GRANDNUT.

HAVE U SEEN THE MOVIES "CAMOUFLAGE" & "RUNS" ?? (WHERE THE MIGHTY AND HIGH PLACED PEOPLE ARE HAVING WILD PARTIES AND SLEEPING WITH YOUNG GIRLS/STUDENTS YOUNGER THAN THEIR OWN DAUGHTERS) WELL I HAVE ATTENDED SUCH A PARTY AND SAW THAT WITH MY OWN EYES. I HAVE TALKED TO YOUNG GIRLS WHO TOLD ME IT'S A NORMAL OCCURRENCE AND THEY LOVE AND ARE USED TO IT. MORE THAN 90PERCENT OF THE WHOLE UNIVERSITIES STUDENTS IN NIGERIA KNOWS THIS. SO WHO ARE THE CENSORS BOARD REALLY PROTECTING?? I THINK IT'S HYPOCRISY AT IT'S HIGHEST FORM... NOW THEY WANT TO TELL A 40YRS OLD MAN THAT HE CANT WATCH A NIGERIAN MOVIE SHOWING THE BACK OF A LADY. OR THAT YOU CANT KISS IN A NAIJA MOVIE BECAUSE IT IS NOT OUR CULTURE.. I SAY RATE THE FILM 12, 16, 18 . NOW THEY ARE SAYING MOVIES SHOULD BE MAID TO PORTRAY A POSITIVE IMAGE OF NIGERIA. IT'S NOW THE DUTY OF MOVIE MAKERS TO SELL A POSITIVE IMAGE OF NIGERIA (NOT THE REALITY OF NIGERIA) YET NON OF THEM HAVE EVER INVESTED IN THE MOVIE INDUSTRY, BUT THEY VERY WELL WANT TO DICTATE WHAT KIND OF MOVIES SHOULD BE MADE. AT THE RATE THEY ARE GOING THEY WILL SOON BE BANNING ANY MOVIE THAT DOESN’T PORTRAY A POSITIVE IMAGE OF NIGERIA...
