hmmm, u must be sleepy cause no where in my responses on this thread did I say that. If you read my post 62, you will see that I clearly stated that it may not only even be about the names used in the movie..it could be the storyline and other things....however, I did ask that, what if the scriptwriters were using the names to generate sales...so what? That my friend does not mean that I stated it like you just claimed...
No, i'm not...how about you, are you sleepy?

I didn't ask whether or not he named himself. I asked if Vince is an African name.

Things Fall Apart is a terrible example because it is a story whose main focus was to tell the story of a particular community and its culture at a particular point in history. The cultural aspect was actually the centerpiece of the story so of course authentic Igbo names would have to be used.

When you're dealing with a story where it is more about the plot than it is about the cultural coloring, it may not be a bad idea to make the cultural context as generic as possible.

For instance, before there was Nollywood, one of the predecessors to the industry in the 1970s were the photo-novels like "The Spear," "Fearless Fang," "Sadness & Joy," etc. These photo-comics were very popular in Nigeria and Nigerians identified intensely with them even though rather than having Nigerian names, the characters were called "Larry," "Lemmy," "Sonia," etc.

Meanwhile, the same comics were also popular in Ghana where the audience also identified intensely with the characters and believed they were Ghanaians despite them having Ghanaian names. They were popular in Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and other countries... and every country you go to, the people there believe the comics came from their own country and represented them.

Till today, nobody is really sure where exactly they came from... It's probably Kenya or South Africa. But the point is that the absence of specific cultural markers made them easily accessible to a wide range of Africans and even people in the West Indies. Unlike Things Fall Apart, the aim is to sell the story and the characters... not a culture.

Does the plot specifically identify the setting as Accra or are you saying that just because you happen to know that it is a Ghanaian movie?
Accra is specifically mentioned

6 pages? Wow! Where was I? I missed these whole thing! lol.

names, names names.

What is in a name btw?

I've always wondered though....with all the atheist, all the clamor to take God out of society, to shrivel religion to just a 'Belief Manual' [optional to purchase or read].
With all the Illuminati, the satan worshippers, atheists, witchcraft, black magic, voodoo, etc being very daring these days.....WHY HAVE I NOT SEEN NAMES LIKE:
- Lucifer
-Satan,
- Jezebel
-Delilah
-Judas
-Hitler
-Idi Amin etc...

Seriously, why are people not carefreely [sp] bearing some of the names above? WHY?
Or have you seen any Mr. Smith Satan? Or Mrs. Lucy Lucifer? :D

Non belief in god does not equal believing in the devil of subscribing to evil ideologies.

No. Teufel means "devil" not satan. No, satan and devil are not one and the same entity, even if they get mixed up by their use. And Teufel is a common name in the german speaking nations. There are streets named with that word too.

O ga o. After watching the first few minutes of the movie I had to turn it off. I want to enjoy a movie without having to see someone's but crack or any other part if IT IS NOT NECESSARY. I had to come here to see what you guys have to say about the movie so I could decide on whether to continue watching it or not. Iya Laje's feelings about it just made me decide not to watch it. I trust your judgement Iya Laje...longest time.

I had to respond because of all the comments I read about the name issue. Please we really need to stick with names such as Lizzy and forget names such as Titania or whatever it was. That particular name was a total distraction for me. it would have been understandable if it was Tatiana for pronunciation sake. All the comments about crossing over, colonization, sales, and what not does not make any sense to me. In American movies, if a character is from Kenya, the name would be Mwidau not Alfredo. I don't want to believe American movies give names to cross over anywhere...then I might be wrong. As a matter of fact, we watched a lot on Chinese movies while growing up in Naija and I don't believe I heard a Cleopatra while watching....hey, I might be wrong too. I don't rule out using english names totally but can we mix it up. If there is a Peter, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Tutu as a name for the other character. Why does all the characters have to bear english names. It does not matter if everyone in a certain village in Ghana has an english name, a name such as Achempong (sp?) can make a little difference while watching an African movie.

Vince, nothing do you jor, I was put off by that stupid name too 'cos I kept wondering if they meant Tatiana. I guess not.

Sorry Vince, satan is the devil and devil is satan. Sometimes demons are referred to as devils merely because they have the attributes of the devil which is satan.
