This makes me think of a lady in my gym...First all she comes fully made up...I don't gerrit..
She has this bad body odor and I'm thinking if you can take time to make up...you can at least try now..
Instead she sprays on some funny parfumerie that mixes with the body odor and the stench is suffocating to say the least...
I marked her and make sure, there's enough distance between us in the classes...I can't die...

Well, it is a stereotype when Naija people say Oyinbo smell -maybe in Europe sha. The reason our people say that is because of the way Oyinbo people clean themselves. For example they use wash rag with soap to wash themselves -this, to many Naija, makes them dirty since it is not kainkain (what's the english?). It's just ignorance. On the other hand, given the kind of "oyinbos" (mind you, Oyinbo here means anybody who is not black) that come to Naija one can see the reason for this belief. They have been taught personal hygiene since young age. Abi no be dem dey make all dis stuff?

As for Africans/Naija, well, I do think it's a stereotype as well. Many people in Naija now have access to deodorant and they use it. Granted, a lot of people are still oblivious to deodorant but it is not as bad as they make it seems. I went to Naija a couple of years ago, other than the polluted Lagos air, I didn't sense any distinct smell -and I went to Oshodi market and Tejuosho o. Even when I went to my ancient city in Ondo state people I met didn't smell to me except for a couple of my grandma's friends I went to greet (my grandma is not alive) but their smell is not of a bad smell but of that distinct ocean breeze smell. Even those grandmas have what they use to keep dirty odor away.

Generally, everybody smells. Now what kind of smell do you have? The good? The bad? Or the horrible?

There is a difference between body odor and a natural scent of a person. Two totally different things. There is nothing clean about a smell that chokes you. I agree that diet has something to do with both the natural scent and actual body odor.

yeye stereotype....I dated Oyibo for years and they didn't stink! NOT at all. Cuddling and snuggling was dreamy because of the lovely smell!
People should check the 'type' of oyibo that they date! Trailer trash Oyibo would DEFINITELY smell like rotten whiskey and tobacco mixed with cheap cologne! But an educated and hygiene conscious oyibo never runs out of body deodorant, nice perf and takes their shower daily if not twice! Because most times [at least the ones i knew] were gym buffs, so, they showered after exercising!

Sure, diet like onions and garlic make ALL people smell! Just as Akpu and ogiri would make an Anambra man smell IF he does not do his basic hygienic routines!

Y'all know that at the end of the day, whether black or white skin, ALL humans have the same color of ORGANS and BLOOD! And the body processes FOOD SAME WAY! So, if an Ijebu man starts eating lots of Indian food with low hygiene, he would smell like an indian! I know some naija people who stink like indians and all....- THEIR DIET!

All,

Propensity to sweat in certain places also cause body odour. Many folk have sweaty armpits. Hence they need anti-perspirant/deodorant, maybe they need to shave their armpits as well. Some men have sweaty feet, they need to take appropriate measures to deal with the odour. Some women have smelly hair-dos, they also need to sort it out. This affects all races I have observed.

Jamie Fox once did a stand up routine about visiting Kenya and how everyone stunk to him... and how he stunk to everyone else!

He said he was in a taxi, smelled something horrible and said to the taxi driver: "What is that nasty smell?"
Taxi Driver back to Jamie: "What IS that nasty smell?!"
Jamie say he looks at the driver and says: "Motherfucker that's you!"
The driver turns around and said: "Mothafooka that's YOU!:"

GSA is right!. Since being here I am now used to these smells here. I enter the Nigerian leg of a flight back home and I can't breathe! The smell of my own people suffocates me to the point I want to pass out.

Smells that I am sure I was used to before but now seem foreign and terrible!. .

It truly comes down to what you get used to over time.
...and it gets worse the longer you stay here.
