Sigh...I was going to say something really nasty about your command of the English language especially inverted commas and parentheses but I won't after all. There is still hope for you after all.
you could if you want. i am not against learning. i learn everyday as am not perfect. if my written english is what bothers you the most about my posts, you could teach me better english. am still happy with myself though that my teachers at all levels of my education feel contrary to your opinion as i have never had to repeat an english class nor failed any recognised external english language examinations. like i said, teach me more if you feel i am deficient. afterall another essence of joining public forums and reading is to better one's english. waiting for the lessons dia! or i could give you my email to start a private one if you don't want to go public with it. another reason why i am happy is that, at least i know there is someone on naijarules forum that has made it his biz to watch/correct my english. am getting what some pple pay for free of charge! lucky me!!! there is definitely some hope for me afterall.

You're obviously an unformed youth and it would be a waste getting into any serious exchange with you. Just don't push it with the insults.

what about we people here in north america that do not speak those language, to me what some of you guys are saying is that we here in the western world should not watch your movies, what do you guys have against english language, a lot of us watch your movies because it's done in english, we can't watch a movie that we can't understand the language.

That's a very good point.grinning:

When you guys abroad start buying original movies and paying the actual filmmakers, instead of pirates and clubs, your needs will become relevant.

But the actual film makers haven't created the required avenue for people abroad to purchase original movies. The only option I've seen is the internet and people like me don't trust giving my account details in the internet. It's not that some people don't want to buy original movies so that the producer can get some of his investment back, it's just that we don't have enough options. Let the producers create a good avenue similar to Blockbuster and you'll see if we'll not buy movies from them. Right now, East Street market or those pirate video clubs are my only options if I want to watch Nollywood movies.

...And seriously, where exactly does one go about paying the actual filmmakers??? For instance, I pay hard-earned money on buying from a website (referred by people here) who supposedly buys from Nigeria and send it to me. They do look original to me from the packaging. Not having being in Nigeria in years, it would be hard-pressed for me to say what the original from our local stores actually look like.

Has someone actually taken the time to mentioned to those abroad where the proper place to buy Nigerian movies should be...? I would guess that most people abroad who support the industry do so as a result of helping further something good coming out of Nigeria... and would not be hard-pressed to support it properly if the proper system is pointed out. I know I would.

As far as I understand, there does not seem to be an organized system of purchasing these movies and it is therefore unfair to crticize anyone for purchasing from where it is available to them.

P. S. I see Meddeen is pointing out the same valid points... We would like to help fix it, so show where to go.

Well, you buy original, so in a way, you're already doing that. My statement is for those buying copies and renting. Always buy original and somehow the money gets home, no matter how small.

Not really. Most people do things because they get SOMETHING out of it. Very few do it to help anyone or anything. Most people watching the movies abroad do so because it entertains them, reminds them of home, it gives to them. The furthering the industry part of it is just a by-product - which is normal aand to be expected.

My statement wasn't criticism, but fact. Any industry anywhere...consumers within that market will only receive consideration from the industry when the money they supposedly "spend" becomes significant enough to give them weight, leverage. Right now, much of that money goes into pirate pockets. There's work to be done on the filmmakers' end as well as on the consumers' end, but it doesn't change the fact that the little money right now has no weight.

Egbon Sholly,

A valid point has been raised. MPAA, IFPA, RIAA etc, etc exist to protect the IP rights of American showbiz around the world. American studies sign up to these organizations to defend their rights overseas and in return the organizations get a percentage from every American-produced CD, DVD, movie, play - indeed entertainment of any sort.

So is it not possible for a group of naija businessmen in the US to persuade the major Nollywood producers and marketers to subrogate their IP rights in North America via a deed of assignment, power of attorney etc. This new entity now has legal rights to go after anyone marketing Nollywood movies other than through licensed channels. That way, more money gets home.

The idea is so obvious that I am pretty sure some one has thought about it already and perhaps tried it. If so, do you know why such efforts were unsuccesful?
