Did in December last year, quietly, and USPTO.gov approved it. Now he wants to start collecting from those using the word. Of course na Naija man.

    Read Ladybrille on this

PS: This directly involves me and clarifications and legal options are being considered.

Can Nollywood practitioners(both in Naija and diaspora) mount a collective legal opposition to this (hopefully with Naija govt support) ?

Also, should the Naija movie industry move to copyright that name worldwide ?

    ciao

There are SIX trademarks for the word 'Nollywood' - three are dead and the remaining three belong to Mr Nicholas Opara in three categories. Some people are saying it isn't that bad because he didn't trademark the name in 'direct' relation to the Nigerian film industry.
Personally I think it might be quite a worry - have a look at 'Category 2' - I'm not a lawyer but isn't the 'wording' more than clear enough? I highlighted a few things in bold.

We're aware of all three. They don't know what they're talking about. The one you highlighted pretty much covers everything we do. I already have a Cease and Desist from him on a Nollywood domain and it won't stop there. I can't discuss what I'm doing publicly now.
