I am not joking. The guy is a close friend, and he has lost his wife and kids to this babalawo. Sounds insane but 100% true! Happening right now somewhere in Benin! We have a Nigeria community where I used to reside in Germany and I am always in touch with all the members who are now friends. Our friend's wife is now living with the "snatcher" babalawo! And that is kid of tough to approach, at least by the guy. How do you want to console this guy? See what migration is still doing to us?

    Babalawo snatched my wife!
    Kere di ke ke
    Babalawo had a big knife!
    Kere di ke ke
I fetched a very big stick!
    Kere di ke ke
Ruddie yelled ‘bend down quick, quick’!
    Kere di ke ke
I bent as fast as I could
    Kere di ke ke
The knife missed my head by a foot
    Kere di ke ke
    'Ruddie', I hissed and said
    Kere di ke ke
‘This man is as good as dead’
    Kere di ke ke
    Ruddie looked up and down
    Kere di ke ke
He turned his wise head around
    Kere di ke ke
‘Nna, let us leave this place
    Kere di ke ke
Or else we will be disgraced
    Kere di ke ke
    Your wife has been embraced
    Kere di ke ke
By a man we can’t displace’

[to the sound of a drum beat...chei, this is totally irreverent but it just brings out the beastly-ditty in me]

Rudie, mmany yearsb ago when I was a teenager, the late Alake of Egbaland used his traditional authority to confiscate(gbese le) another man's wife. The man and wife came visiting from Lagos for a function, by the following easter, madam had become an olori(King's wife). Yet, the madam had children by her hubbyn oh...These are some of the things I would have liked to abolish by decree as a military dictator. Let me not go on jare, there are so many things that Naijas do, which I would have cracked down on!

Not neccessarily, there are many marriages where one partner may be temporarily based in another country due to career, business, ministry etc. That doesn't mean the other partner has to jump ship.

Any wife (or husband) who wants to be snatched will be snatched. It doesn't even matter if the husband lives in the same room with her or vice versa! When it is time it MUST happen! I know another friend who's job in Germany is going to jail. He has served two different terms of 4 years each (8 years)! Now he is deported after serving another 3 years and 6 months! He has eventually reunited with his wife and 2 sons he left for almost 12 years. Almost 12 years he was busy selling drugs and going to jail in Germany, why didn't anyone (including babalawos) snatch the wife?
