The drive to stem the nose-dive in sales of Yoruba movies was the major focus of a seminar put together by members of the Yoruba Movie and Films Marketers Association recently.

And if deliberations at the forum were well utilised, there might just be a glimmer of hope for improved movie sales in the sector.

Before now, some practitioners in the Yoruba movie genre in an attempt to identify the cause of the downward slide in movie sales, pinpointed quality. It was then resolved that guilds should be formed and that no one single practitioner would belong to more than two guilds as against the usual practice, which is an all comers affair.

The latest move has been hailed as a right move in the right direction and the thought of it acknowledged as visionary.

At the forum, which held in Ibadan, Oyo State, were dignitaries that included Professor Akinwunmi Ishola, Pa Adebayo Faleti, Prince Jide Kosoko, Adebayo Salami, Abdulrasak Abdulrahman, Rotimi Aina Kushoro, Lekan Olagoke and Miss Abosede Francis, zonal co-ordinator of National Films And Video Censors Board (NFCVB), South-West.

In his speech, the association’s President, Lekan Olagoke, lamented that the Yoruba movie genre was not accorded the recognition it deserved, adding that the association had started the process of withdrawing from Nollywood and forming Yoruwood.

He also stated that forming Yoruwood would enable the association in concert with the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) to build the industry as well as entrench common interest for the progress of the industry.

Meanwhile, stakeholders at the forum hailed the invitation and presence of the representative of the censor’s board to the interactive session, as it would afford marketers, who are known to fund movie productions, the criteria for censoring movies and films.

However, the need to duly obtain the consent of musical rights owners before such works are used in films and movies turned out to be the highpoint of the speech presented by the censor’s board representative. Francis noted that henceforth movie makers would be required to show proof of such before they could license any film in which musical works or recording artistes are used for distribution in the country.

In another twist, ••Daily Independent•• discovered that the marketers did not explore the area of merchandising and endorsement as is the case with other movie industries of the world.

They should ORGANIZE.
Nigerians are generally so lazy to organize themselves in anything.
There is heavy limitations in chaos.
No business flourishes properly without it being well organized.
See white folks.
