Though we all are guilty of lying, yet we get offended when we are lied to and have drawn distinctions between betrayal and dishonesty.
Whilst the bold- faced deceptive lies are destructive, the “little white lies” are often considered as harmless. White lies are normally told to be polite or tactful. The problem with lying is, most people keep pushing the boundaries and they get caught in the mayhem that ensues.

An Egyptian bride caught in the web of her lies is being given a taste of her own medicine. In a civil court ruling in Abu Dhabi, she was ordered to pay her ex husband $7,500 in compensatory damages after he discovered she had lied about her virginity and her past.

The husband accused his wife of misleading him into believing she had never been married; is still a virgin, and faking her virginity.

The court was able to establish that, not only was she previously married but got divorced, she also made false claims with her “father’s help” in the marriage contract.

Virginity could be faked by doing Hymen reconstruction surgery, also known as hymenoplasty surgery, hymen surgery or hymen restoration.

This surgery is a 1-2 hours procedure, which can be done under general or local anesthesia. The torn edges of the hymen are put back together using dissolvable stitches. Patients are discharged from hospital on the same day and can return to work within 2 days. Full recovery time is six to eight weeks.

For the faint-hearted, there is a non-surgical procedure known as artificial hymen. The hymen is a type of prosthetic membrane created for the purpose of simulating an intact human hymen.

It works by carefully inserting the Artificial Hymen into the vagina twenty minutes before sex. Once inside, it expands a little, tightening the virginal and when there is penetration, a liquid that appears like blood is triggered and oozes out mimicking an actual hymen breakage.

Faking of virginity is increasingly popular within Asian and Arabic countries where a huge emphasis is still placed on virginity and hymen.

Unfortunately for the Egyptian bride, her con was exposed when someone anonymously sent her husband a series of text messages informing him of her previous marriage and fake virginity. A copy of her divorce document was also sent to him as proof.

Due to the overwhelming evidence presented in the case, the Appeal Court of Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal upheld a previous ruling that found her guilty of deception and increased the compensation by making her pay for emotional damages as well.

Speaking on why he decided to sue his wife, the husband said that, he is “ suffering from depression and had lost trust in the people around him as a result of her deception” the compensation money is to help him overcome the humiliating ordeal.

We are constantly reminded that, most things built on lies often come crumbling down and learning from other people’s mistakes is far better than being caught in our own but we never listen. Just last week, the unscrupulous activities of a Nollywood Actor “Solomon Akiyesi” were exposed when he tried to mary another woman whilst still married.

Though this seems to have made him more popular, his credibility is destroyed because, once known as a liar, people would stop believing anything he says.

The question now is, what lies would you tell and how far would you go to get what you want, knowing you might get caught?
