.....especially you-know-who. She made me fall in love all over again with her acting skills. What a blessing she is to all movie lovers. I saw the film 3 times on 3 different continents already. I'm just overwhelmed. I really loved it.
I totally agree with your analysis, Kala. I rate this a 6.5/10. I expected more. After watching HOAYS I have mixed feelings about the movie, if I was grading it as a Nolly flick then I would rate it as one of the best Nollywood movies ever...but the movie is hardly a Nolly flick...budget wise.
The pacing of the movie was too fast, the characters were not clearly defined, I think this is one of the problems when adapting a book to screen...it's hard to fit all that info from the book into a two hour format. The film ended up looking like scenes of plot points from the book. I think the adaption would have worked better as an epic 3 hour movie. That would have giving them room to work on the characters better, like Ukwu and Odenigbo's relationship which was hardly explored. It looked like the movie was made for people who've read the book. I would like to hear the opinions of people who haven't read HOAYS
Another thing I did not like was that the war was kind of whitewashed, I was surprised that they did not feature much of the conditions, especially of the kids during that time. I don't see why the Naija censors board was holding up the release of this movie, the war scenes were kind of bland.
The acting from all the actors was great.
I'll give this a C+, I expected better.
