"Shuga" show from Kenya

Its amazing how everyone thinks that Nollywood's biggest problem is piracy. Hello! Distribution????

How can you complain of piracy when you haven't a structure in place to properly distribute a million copy in a country that has more than 20 times that buying pouplation.

instead of using the environment as a negative..filmmakers should be exploiting the environment, do you know how many obodo filmmakers would kill for a chance to shoot a movie in a place like Naija? We have all that scenery outside ...meanwhile 99% of our scenes happen indoors...

Now this is absolutely not true. But then I'd have understood where you were coming from if you hadn't only factored in Nollywood.

However, in defence of Nollywood, a condusive enviroment would have done the trick. Imagine how much land money they would have to pay if they were mostly shooting outside?! But because they operate at minimum profit almost all the time, according to the marketers, they would cut cost where ever they can.

I don't think, i know. If you don't have an aggressive distribution that circulates all around, the result is what we have in Nollywood. Mind you piracy is not just here, it is everywhere in the world. Ours is special because we don't have a 'proper' medium to distribute our films.

AIDS is everywhere in the world, and for good measures, a glossy mini series is not needed to advertise the message. My God did you watch Shuga? It's as if everybody in Kenya is infested with AIDS. Trust me, a series like that will never see the time of the day on any Major TV in America. Do you think they don't get AIDS in America? But that's another discussion.

Again on the movie access, you can't really tell which of our movies consumers will pick. Figuerine might be considered quality and people might prefer Jenifa, a lower quality movie. Producers are trying to produce better movies but the incentive they get for their effort is nothing to write home about.

It's common sense to think a better produced product will sell better than an inferior one, it's not rocket science. If all the movies have the same chances in sales then why Silverbird no dey screen Fazebook Babes?

I just cannot agree with your insinuation that Nigerian producers are daft and can't make quality movies.

Angels in America is a stage made into miniseries. A stage play that talks about AIDS when no one knew almost nothing about the disease. Shuga is not Angels in America. Angels in America does not depict America/New York as a society infested with AIDS, Shuga does depict Nairobi as a place infested with AIDS! Keep trying to make sense, my man.

Evidently you are pessimistic and I don't think any amount of lecture or elaboration will change that. You keep degrading Nollywood by comparing it to unknown entities, now you are bringing in AMAA awards, an award that is by all means an ambiguous project, to show us how bad Nollywood is. Have you heard of Nollywood Awards? Oh...just tanda there...Nollywood go dey wait for you to give them your approval.

While it does not take a rocket science to point out better produced product, it should not take it to know that consumers will pick what they want to pick. Kajola was screened by cinemas in Naija, does that make it a better quality? I laugh. Silverbird is a corporation and they will do what they have to do to make profits, our movie companies are doing the same thing.

The thing about you is that, you either know nothing about Nollywood at all, or you just want to hate on it. We have been watching trailers of Naija movies on this site time after time and an average Naijaruler can see they are making effort and are going in the right direction. How you don't see this is baffling. I didn't say Nollywood should just remain where it's at, you did by saying it will take a while to catch up with Kenya. I only reminded of who numero uno is.

So when you see an executive producer for an ongoing series, say mad men, or modern family, what is the role of an executive producer in this capacity? There is no longer any need for 'funding' as the show has been picked up and is successful, no need to talk to network executives to take on the show, so what exactly does an exec. producer do in this scenario? Also, in a successful show, who is more powerful, the start of the show or the exec producer? Please I know for the latter question, it depends on the show, the star, etc, but what is the norm?

Wow!!! Lightbulb. Thank you, it all makes sense now. That's why Ray can be executive producer on Everybody loves raymond, still star in it, and write and direct episodes as well. He can be wearing all those hats and still be an EP. Thanks VB and the crew, now when I watch credits, it will all make sense or when I hear Mika or morning Joe say 'my producer won't let me do this or that', it now makes sense! And as for the Charlie Sheen bit, ''GOTCHA" I totally get it. Also, yes, I meant to say 'star'. So basically, the 'Star' can be as primadonna as he/she wants to be, but once the EP steps in, calmer heads prevail. OK. Got it.

Wow! you guys just killed what would have been a riveting thread with your strutting around like overfed peacocks spewing your knowledge of what is excellent production and all that jazz.

Shuga is what it is, it was very interesting, i didnt miss any episode on HiTV UK.

I keep seeing all these threads bashing Nigerian movies on the script, production, camera, continuity and what have you. Some of you here are very good at giving criticism, but what's needed is for someone to step up to the plate and produce something better than what you bash here. Maybe when you get into it proper, you'd appreciate the frustrations the nig producers face and yet produce movies that are still watchable and riveting. Just do something and stop with the criticism.
