Hey, I did not know she 'lives' with a white family? Was she adopted? Anyhow, this week has just been a week for idiots. Someone said the people complaining were AFAMs, who else will complain? that's why I sais we're our own worst enemies. Every group of black people has their own internal issues they deal with and it's almost the women. Like someone else said, pettiness knows no bounds. Someone also used the term 'nappy', I hate that term, so deragotary, my hair is very course, I've never referred to my hair as 'nappy' don't like the term. I just started going natural and still getting used to it, but lemme tell you, Oyinbo clients are telling me I look younger, all of a sudden, they notice my eyes, and one old rich dude said he liked my 'lips'. hmmmmm!!! never told me that before. anyhow, fortunately, for me, there are only 3 sistahs high enough on the corporate ladder that are my clients, and 2 are natural and the other loves it too. I think it's really a matter of education and exposure, so sometimes you can't fault idiots.

Anyhow, it's a shame to see that in 2012, not much has changed!!

Her mother sent her away when it was obvious that Gabby was gifted and there were facilities that could train her properly to her full potential. She went to go live with that family then I think on to China where her Olympic coach is

Success breeds haters sha...the girl is now uber successful and folks have to find a way to bring her down. I for one couldn't care less if her hair was in a big ol' afro, that girl went to London to snatch wigs and take names...and she has been doing so amazingly. I wonder when hair became remotely important in sports; mumuness at it's highest! Maybe in that case Nigerian D'tigers for do Jerry coils for head to see if they could have averted that immense beatdown...mtchewwwwing badly!

I also get the feeling that some very ignorant people would much rather see the "exoticals" type of black people on tv - You know the high yellow kind with the supposed "good hair", than see different other representations of black people on tv...which I find to be extremely narrow minded and stupid, even more so when the people in question are black.

I think most of the athletes, when they show great promise, sometimes, with their parents permission of course move in with coaches for better access to training facilities.

when i went natural this same woman gave me the hardest time. i just couldn't believe it.

and most times I get more compliments from the oyibo people at my job than the black people. two black women actually gave me a harder time than anybody about my hair until i decided it was in my best interest to cut ties with them.

some people have a different view of beauty and what is "corporate" and not. Barbarellanoir calls them exoticals, if you don't look exotical you don't fit in.

i'm going to try wearing afro puffs for the first time to work (possibly next week), if somebody finds that offensive oh well.

I find this hard to believe...wow! America really does have racial issues, either that or I am a very naive british resident. I work my fro to work every so often (BNY Mellon) and get more compliments than I know what to do with from both races...so I'm wondering why them fish brains find that not good enough for the corporate workplace.

I really think that it depends on the environment and the industry. Some industries are more accepting than others. For example, your more traditional industries like banking, it is harder to pull off non 'mainstream' appearance, whereas in the tech industry, it's more acceptable. Additionally, it also depends on the position one holds and how high in demand it is, for example, I see more specialized physicians sporting their dreads and naturals because anesthesiologist, cardiothorasic surgeons are hard to come by. If one is in a high visibility position, EVP, Sr. EVP, etc, it's harder to sport your natural, you gotta be the best in that field or be in a more permissive field. Sales positions almost definitely keeps you from sporting 'ethinic' looks, unless of course, that's what you're selling. If one is in sales, you're selling your company first, then the product or the services, so you always have to dress 'acceptable' as you can walk into any business and it's always best to play it safe.

All in all though, I think it's changing, more women are starting to embrace their naturalness so to speak, each person having their personal reasons for doing so, hence, I think the change is emminent, though it will be gradual.

But I've heard that racism is more prevalent in the UK than here.
